“Either she’s an artful liar,” said Giles, when Carswell had related his conversation with Mrs Stoddard, “or it was someone else and she’s been threatened into silence by them.”

“I would think the latter is more likely,” said Carswell, “unless you have uncovered some terrible reports of her.”

“No,” said Giles. “Congratulations, Mr Carswell, that is an excellent piece of work. Let’s go and talk to her husband. That is long overdue.”

“So you have thoughts about him?” said Carswell.

“I don’t know,” said Giles.

“I did have another thought, regarding the horse head,” said Carswell. “It might be worth seeing if one could match the material that stained it with the blood on the bed sheets. It would not be too difficult to prepare a sample, but of course I do not have my microscope to hand.”

“There maybe someone who might have one in Eastby. There is a surgeon here,” said Giles. “We will ask Mr Peel. He can also tell us where Stoddard’s shop is.”
